Although I've not seen any measurements, I think the 'classic 50s profile' of the RP is more like 'rounded XL'. Most Standards have come with profiles Gibson would describe as slim, slim tapered or rounded. Personally, I think I'd love an SG with a maple fretboard, but I'm not so sure about the neck profile on the RP. I doubt you'd be aware of much difference with the tone of the Raw Power. To me, coil taps would be a bigger factor than the type of pickups, (I've also loved all the Burstbuckers I've tried). (The '14 standard you looked at would've been the same). ![]() Both are excellent, and I'm lucky enough to have coil taps on the '57, which I find really useful, especially when combining pickups. So far I've not wanted to put one SG down & pick up the other to make use of the different pickups. I currently own SG standards with '57 & 490/8 pickups - yes, I'd say the 490/8 set are slightly hotter, especially on the bridge, but you'll get far more variation out of your amps settings than you will out of swapping between these pickups. ![]() Here are a few opinions from me, not everyone will agree! But there are lots of great SGs out there. By the time you've finished reading my long post, someone has likely bought that These features better than the more decorated and more expensive Standard. The SG Raw Power is listed as an SG Special, which means no inlays, no binding and a satin finish, and I like all The that was only issued on the "natural" blonde finish guitars (my favorite), the other colors were given regular Gibson black. The only thing I never liked about the Raw Power was the see-through pick guard, but The RP has less in the way of decoration, no binding and no inlays on the fretboard but the dots. What's all this mean? You can't go wrong with either one, especially since you stated early that you were lookingįor an unusual color. If you found a Standard with '57s, the bridge p'up would be the '57 Classic plus, which is hotter than the regular '57 and is my absolute favorite pickup. Easy to dial in your tone with either one. ![]() To me, this is a minor difference, but a clearĭistinction. The holy grail for some (but not all) guitarists. I believe the 498T is wound to be a lot hotter with a more modernistic sound, and the '57 Classic Between the '57 Classic and the 498Tīridge pickup. They are both accurate, the sound from them is round and The 490R neck pickup and a '57 Classic neck pickup. One can say if your Standard has the '57s or not.Ĭomparing the pickups: There is very little difference IMHO between These are also among the best pickups Gibson makes, and they are used toĮquip SGs and Les Pauls going back to the 1985 re-taking of the Gibson company by Henry J and his team.Ī few select year classes of SG Standards have been stock with '57s. The Standard SG normally has been equipped with a 490R neck Quality, finish, ornamentation and value. For production guitars, they are right at the top when it comes to The only negative thing that couldīe said about them is that they are unusual. ![]() The fact that they are a solid Gibson build with '57 Classic pickups means that theyĪre highly desirable and should not be considered as a mod platform IMHO. The fact that they did not sell too well and were discontinued after a year or so means that Through a dreadful depression and the economy was at a standstill and the recovery was only just getting These did NOT sell very well, (maybe because we were all suffering I was immediately attracted, so you won't hear me All trademarks, images and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective companies. The SG Raw Power came out in like 2009.
